Comeback Medvedev Wins Maiden Championship in Over Two Years
Nineteen of the Russian's twenty-one championships have been won on hard surfaces
A comeback Daniil Medvedev won his initial championship for 882 days with success over Corentin Moutet in the competition final.
The athlete, a former number one, has endured a challenging year, winning just a single victory at the major tournaments and undergoing a meltdown at the American major.
The player's inconsistency on the professional circuit - and struggles with his serve in specific - resulted in him dropping out of the world's top 10 and finally parting ways with long-term mentor Gilles Cervara.
Now working with Thomas Johansson and Rohan Goetzke, he has steadily advanced in the past month - peaking in a tightly fought competitive triumph over challenger Corentin Moutet.
It is Medvedev's first championship following the 2023 Rome Masters and initial on a hard court since March of the previous year.
Victory also signifies he has achieved twenty-one titles at twenty-one various tournaments.
"This marks the first occasion I am participating in a event with my both daughters together, so to get a trophy is particularly special," stated ranked player Medvedev.
"This title is in tribute of my younger daughter my daughter, because the first title I won when my older daughter my daughter was born was for her."
The athlete, the past champion, had been defeated in his previous six championship matches, including in the German tournament earlier this year.
The player's defensive play style and frequent reactions on court had prompted some to doubt if his capacity to perform at the top level was over.
Yet the player has made changes in the past month, striving to approach the net and perform positively, backed up by an better serve.
Medvedev recovered from a disadvantage in the initial set against the tricky opponent, taking four of the final five games to gain the advantage.
Both players traded break points in the following set before the challenger, bidding for his first professional victory, gained dominance to create a final set.
Moutet saved 4 early-game break points in a tight deciding set before Medvedev broke to that score to secure the win.
Suitably, he clinched the win with a shot at the net, with the Frenchman incapable to manage a volley after two hours and 38 minutes.
