EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States
The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
