The Global Health Body Sounds Alert Over Critical Scarcity of Obesity Injections

Under a tenth of individuals that would benefit from obesity jabs like Wegovy can access them, caution the global health agency as it issues its first advice on the drugs.

With more than one billion people worldwide currently classified as obese, it is calling for increased and just access to GLP-1 medication.

Per projections, in excess of 2,000,000,000 are projected to be living with obesity by 2030 unless action is taken.

"Our latest guidelines recognises that excess weight is a chronic disease that can be treated with comprehensive and lifelong support," said its chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

High costs, constrained manufacturing, and supply-chain constraints are major hurdles to universal access to the injections that can help people shift substantial weight, notes the body.

GLP-1 Therapy Scarcity

Even in the current most optimistic case, the supply of GLP-1 therapies could only cover approximately 100 million people – fewer than 10% of the global need, as stated by the health organization.

The advice urges governments and firms to expand access, through approaches like patent sharing.

The intellectual property rights on a key compound – the main component of a leading brand – is scheduled to end in several countries in 2026.

How Weight-Loss Drugs Operate

These medications replicate a biological compound to slow digestion, suppress the appetite and boost feelings of fullness so users eat less.

Patients typically see weight reduction within a few weeks of beginning the once-weekly jabs.

Studies indicates people may see weight return a year later of discontinuing the drug, because their typical food cravings resume.

Being overweight or obese raises your chance for developing medical conditions, like type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular issues, stroke, and certain cancers.

Excess weight impacts individuals in every country and was linked to 3.7 million deaths worldwide in 2024, per the WHO.
