This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.
We present a dare for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of the horror genre: Sit down with your partner and view Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its online premiere on Hulu. At first glance, it could look like conventional body horror, but beneath Together resides a deep meditation about our choices in loving one another.
A Directorial Debut Delving into Partnership Complexities
Together is the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the two stars infuse a particular energy to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.
The story commences when Tim and Millie relocate from the metropolis to the countryside for her career. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, sure, but that’s primarily where the conventions cease. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.
A Paranormal Spark
While walking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists discover an underground cave. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity starts to affect the pair. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.
The entire film is a gradually intensifying fright fest, blending moments of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes amidst something horrific). The director orchestrates these parts neatly and wraps them up in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.
Layered Performances
A great deal of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.
Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and far away from his network of friends. He is terrified of the idea of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is intensified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for getting around.
The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie avoids making either of his characters the obvious villain.
The couple grapple with the type of challenges that arise in long-term unions over a long period. At their core, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their bond.
Allegory and Meaning
While the paranormal elements in Together represent these anxieties of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to another person, the metaphor does not come across as hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights work together in harmony.
A Debated Finale
Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. On the other hand, some couples having disagreements found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.
Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could function as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your significant other and state, “I understand that choice”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience at this very moment.
Together is available to watch on Hulu at present.
